At the age of 26, Al Rubeling used his life savings of $2,000 to start Al Rubeling, AIA, Architect with the goal to enhance the quality of life of those he served. One year later, John DiMenna, a fellow 1977 University of Maryland School of Architecture graduate, joined Al along with Dave Recchia and Mitch Nelson the year after. All four are still working together today.
As projects grew from small office and retail to include schools, churches, and community buildings, the firm name changed in 1986 to Rubeling & Associates, Inc., Architecture and Interior Design. As decades passed, and the firm continued to grow, the markets served also encompassed banking, elder care, healthcare, local government, and non-profit and corporate organizations.
In 2014, the firm grew once again. After a 12-year relationship, Rubeling & Associates became the architectural and interior design division of Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson, Inc. (JMT), one of the leading multi-disciplined engineering firms in the US.
Thirty-plus years after its start, and the growth and variety of market, client, and project opportunities, the architects and interior designers of Rubeling & Associates, a JMT Division, are still creating spaces and places that enhance the quality of life of those they serve. Every design reflects this goal where people work, learn, heal, play, and pray.
